Amott Road Baptist Church began as a result of a series of open-air services held outside the gates of Peckham Park led by Rev W A Wills in 1873. The group met in homes, then in Norfolk Street (now McDermott Road) Baptist Chapel and then in the Constitutional Hall in East Dulwich Grove.
In 1896 the church bought a piece of farmland in Amott Road and a corrugated iron chapel and a small hall were built that year. Five years later the church bought the adjoining plot of land. The total cost of land, buildings and related expenses was £1,251.16.2d.
A new church was built in 1958 on the site of the small hall.
The original ‘tin chapel’ was badly damaged by heavy snow in 1963 as well as wear and tear:
"From that day on the Pastor and Deacons were ever alert for any further sign of deterioration, for so many young people were accommodated each evening of the week, apart from Sunday School, and it is so difficult to curb youthful activity and enthusiasm. No-one knew just how much more strain could be imposed upon the beloved Tin Chapel, before it became of necessity untenable".
It was finally replaced by the present ‘youth halls’ in 1968.
